Benjamin Sweger Obituary

Benjamin (‘Ben’) J Sweger, 61 of Harrisburg, went to be with the Lord on Monday January 15, 2018 after a short battle with cancer, at the Lebanon VA.  He was born September 20, 1956, in Harrisburg, Pa.  He was preceded in death by his father Ronald R Sweger and brother in law Gary Shutt.  He is survived by his mother Shirley J Sweger of Harrisburg, daughter Heather Hegland and son in law Thomas Hegland, grandson Mason, and granddaughter Molly of Honolulu, HI; daughter Rebecca Sweger and grandson Adler of Burton, MI; daughter Jaimee Sweger and son Benjamin J Sweger II of Middletown.  He is also survived by his brother Ronald R Sweger Jr of Enola; Sister, Debra Roller and her husband David Roller Sr of Steelton; Sister, Dianna Shutt of Enola;Sister, Mary Yeager and her husband Scott Yeager of Carlisle; Brother, David Sweger and his fiancé Christine Neely of Enola; and a lot of nieces and nephews.

Ben served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1977, was briefly stationed in Germany and served a short tour during the Vietnam conflict.  After leaving the Army, he was employed at the New Cumberland Army Depot and then retired from the United States Post Office in Harrisburg in 2010.  In Ben’s younger years, he loved his fast joy riding motorcycles, and was quite a daredevil on them.  He was an avid hunter over the years in the Millerstown area with his father Ron, brother Dave and Daughter,Jaimee by the Sweger Garage.  He had a quirky sense of humor, big smile, a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers and Michigan Wolverine fan and would tease anybody they beat.   In Ben’s lateryears, he got great joy out of mowing the lawn at his church Living Water, and being a daredevil mowing the hills.

Visitation will be held Thursday January 25, 2018 at 9AM until time of service at 10:30 at Living Water Church, 206 Oakleigh Ave, Harrisburg, PA 17111. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap Cemetery with full military honors following the service at 12:30 for family and close friends.  There will be a gathering at the church at 1:30PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ben’s church, 'Living Water', in Memory of Benjamin Sweger, or to the ‘Lebanon VA Medical Center’ whose funds help veterans in need of transportation to and from the VA or ‘Lebanon VA Hospice Unit’, whose funds support the hospice unit where Ben passed away. For the VA, please mail to theLebanon VA Medical Center C/O Voluntary Service,  1700 S Lincoln Ave, Lebanon, PA  17042, in memory of Benjamin Sweger.  The Richardson Funeral Home Enola is handling the arrangements.
