Freda Smart

September 13, 1928 ~ December 14, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Freda Dae Wevodau Smart age 89 of Enola, Pennsylvania died on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.  Born on September 13, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Helen Elizabeth (Cook) and John Mervin Wevodau.  She is survived by her brothers, Carl and Jack Wevodau, both of whom she adored, her children Bronwyn Smart Glasbrenner of Jacksonville, Florida, Mary Jane McMillan of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and her husband Darrell, Helen Wood of Enola, Pennsylvania, and her husband David, and daughter-in-law Leslie Errickson Smart of Enola, Pennsylvania.  She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Benjamin H. Smart, Jr. and her son, Benjamin H. Smart, III.  She was Grammy or Gram to Adrienne Kerstetter, Megan Parker (Andrew), Lana Stitzel (Gary), Lindsey Smart, Erin McMillan, Kathryn Holderbaum (Ralph), Darrell McMillan, Jr., Casey McMillan, Hilary Barker (Brett), Kelsey Houck (Taylor) and to great-grandchildren Gabriel, McKenna and Maxwell Stitzel, Stella Windish, and Benjamin and Owen Parker.

Freda had a strong faith and was a life-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Enola, where she taught Sunday School until the time of her illness.  She also remained active in many other activities in her church.

She was a graduate of Enola High School and remained faithful to her high school friends – the “46ers.” She retired from Dauphin Deposit Bank with 25 years’ of service.  Freda was a member of the East Pennsboro Historical Society, the Golden Agers, the Wednesday and Thursday morning breakfast clubs, the Outdoor Retreat Association, and the Dilly Loo Birds camping club.

Freda was overwhelmed by and insisted we thank everyone for the numerous calls, cards and visits she received during her illness and for the care and kindness provided by her Pastor, Anne Rose Reeves, the staff of West Shore Hospital, Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Grane Hospice.

In addition to her strong, take charge personality, she had a kind and giving spirit, often helping those less fortunate than herself.  She also had a great sense of humor and a memory unmatched by no other.  She was deeply loved by her many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Emmanual Methodist Church, 22 Salt Road, Enola, PA.  There will be a second visitation on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 6839 Wertzville Road, Enola, PA.  A luncheon will be served immediately following the service at Emmanual Methodist Church.  Memorial contributions can be made to the elevator fund at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
