Helen Griffith Obituary

Helen M. Griffith (Sis) of Summerdale, PA passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA. Born in Bloomsburg 1945, she was daughter of the late Isabel W. Slusser and the Leo P. Connor.

Helen graduated from Central Columbia High School and also attended St. Columbia Parochial School. 

Helen is survived by her husband, William D. Griffith, Jr.; and loving and supportive mother to her son, Michael P. Hock of Myrtle Beach, SC (Gretchen Young); and her daughter Michele M. Hock of Santa Barbara CA (and her partner Allison Sharpe).  Surviving are 2 brothers Frederick P. Connor of Mechanicsburg and William G. Connor of Bloomsburg.

Sister-in-lawMelissa Griffith, Brother-in-laws Tommy Griffith & Ron Griffith. 3 Nieces and 3 Nephews.

Helen retired from East Pennsboro Township asRecreation Director.  Two of Helen’s greatest accomplishments as Recreation Director was spearheading the Community Built “Imagination Station Playground” at Adams-Ricci Park; and organizing the Annual Pennsboro Pumpkin Fest.

She volunteered as a Recreation Board Member 14years for East Pennsboro Township.

Prior employment: Columbia County Commissioners, Bloomsburg; PA Department of Agriculture; West Shore Recreation; A & P Store; and Henry F. Coyne, Esquire.

Helen will be missed not only by her family and friends but her community and numerous associations to which she served.

She was a member of Pennsylvania Recreation & Park Society (PRPS) where she served on the Board as Director-at-Large, Citizen Director, and Retired Professional.  Secretary of Community Branch; Secretary of District II; Co-Chaired Annual Conference and served on numerous conference committees. Helen received PRPS Distinguished Member Award; 2 Presidential Citations; and Honorary Life Member.

Also, Helen was proud of her involvement with the Hershey Track & Field Games where she was appointed by The Hershey Company as North American Final Meet Director. Volunteered as PA State &Assistant State Chair. She received recognitionOutstanding North American Regional Award.

She was past member of East Pennsboro Youth Athletic League and served as Board Member, Board Secretary, Girls Softball Director, and Girls Softball Coach.  Secretary for East Pennsboro High School Field Hockey Parents Association,and treasurer for East Pennsboro High School Basketball Parents Association.

Member of Enola American Legion Post #751 Ladies Auxiliary, andEnola Sportsmen Association.

Former Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; former member of Tri-County Federation of Democratic Women; and former Judge of Election for East Pennsboro Township Summerdale Precinct.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 24, 2018 inSummerdale United Methodist Church, 203 2nd St. Summerdale, PA 17093.  A viewing will be held from 9:00 AM until time of service at the church. Interment will be in the Rolling Green Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers Helen would like donations be made to PA Recreation & Park Society, Inc., 2131 Sandy Drive, State College, PA 16803. Richardson Funeral Home Enola is handling the arrangements.
