Donald Shenck Obituary

Donald J.“Moose”Shenck, Born January 29th, 1933 in Harrisburg, PA son of the late Raymond Franklin and Bertha B. Shenck. Preceded in death by beloved wife, Carita Shenck, daughter Dale, seven brothers and one sister. Survived by his sons, Donald A., Barry (Lois), Barton, (Sailaja). Proud grandfather to Lindsay, Rachel, Elizabeth, Sidney, Mason and Lila.

Don joined the Navy as a mechanic in the VF-81 Fighter Squadron during the Korean War.  He served aboard the Coral Sea and Antietam aircraft carriers. When he returned in 1953, he joined the Pennsylvania Railroad as a fireman.  He eventually became an engineer and later joined Amtrak.  He retired in 1996.

Don was best known for his singing and songwriting as well as his dog shows that he performed in nursing homes, schools and other venues.  He was featured in several local TV news stories and was a guest on local radio stations. Don enjoyed going to his camp to play guitar, hunt and watch wildlife.  There he was joined by his family and friends for many memorable weekends. His corny jokes were often the beginning of conversations with people he just met.  And if that didn’t send them running, he would typically break out in song, (usually one he just wrote). Don was a member of The United Church of God, in Colonial Park. He spent his last years at the Spring Creek Nursing Home where care givers and visitors were almost always treated to a song ending with a yodel.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
