Gertrude Utley

Gertrude Utley, 94, of Carlisle, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Born July 20, 1929 in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Arnold Sprute and Mathilda (Wink) Sprute. Gertrude was the widow of James B. Utley Jr. who passed in 1999. Mrs. Utley graduated from the West Middlesex High School in 1947 and was employed in various positions throughout the years, the last serving as a Civil Service testing proctor. However her most treasured role was that as a loving wife and mother to her family. Mrs. Utley was a member of the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, where she had served on various committees. Mrs. Utley was also a member of the Wool and Flax Ministry of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, faithfully crocheting prayer shawls over the years. She enjoyed crocheting, travel, flowers, ice cream and bingo games. Above all Gertrude enjoyed spending time with friends and loved being with her family. Surviving are her daughter, Carol Diffenbaugh (Brad) of Mechanicsburg, and her son Robert J. Utley of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Also surviving are two grandsons; Nathan Diffenbaugh (Lisa), and Robert J. Utley Jr. and three great grandchildren; Peytan, Joslyn and Jacoby Diffenbaugh. She was preceded in death by two siblings; Margaret Tomzcak and Fritz Sprute. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, 125 East Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011. A viewing will be at the church Thursday from noon-1:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Diakon Cumberland Crossings, Longsdorf Way, Carlisle, PA 17015 or to her church.
