Irene Mangle Obituary

Irene Elizabeth Sgrignoli Mangle, born and raised in Enola, and a long-time resident of Mechanicsburg, PA, died on Thursday, March 7th, 2024, at Penn State Hampden Hospital in Enola.  Irene was born on March 19th, 1932, at home in Enola.  She was the daughter of Jerry Sgrignoli (deceased April 22, 1974) and Pauline Sgrignoli (September 18, 1996).

She is survived by her brother Ken Sgrignoli and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Mangle; her five children Brad Mangle, Elisa Winterstein and husband Steve, Eric Mangle and wife Virginia, Clara Keeports and husband David, and Geri Nuss and husband Robert; her twelve grandchildren, Cliff Mangle, Ross Boczar, Erika Kennedy, Dale Boczar, John Keeports, Jacob Keeports, Jasmine Mangle, Kalie Nuss, Jay Winterstein, Courtney Nuss, Lane Winterstein, and Cassidy Nuss; and her great grandchild, Camden Mangle.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Mangle, her brother Cliff Sgrignoli and his wife Nancy, her sister-in-law Anna Sgrignoli, her brother-in-law Charles Mangle and sister-in-law Geraldine Candeloro, and her first-born son Bradford Randall.

Irene was a devoted wife and loving mother who was adored by her family.  She was also a long-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and had been attending Enola First Church of God for the past 10 years.

Irene graduated from Enola High School, Class of 1949, where she had some of her fondest memories and best of times.  Then, she worked three years for the Department of Agriculture at a Veterinary Animal Lab in Summerdale, to raise money for college. In 1955, she graduated from Shippensburg State Teacher’s College with a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in math and chemistry.  While at Shippensburg, she made the National Field Hockey Team twice and would later be inducted into the Shippensburg Hall of Fame in 1998.

On September 17th, 1955, she married John Mangle, and moved to San Antonio, Texas where he was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston.  After John’s discharge from the army, they moved back to the Enola/Mechanicsburg area where she resided until her death.

While raising her five children, she worked at the U.S. Army Logistics Integration Agency at New Cumberland from 1977 to 1999. During a portion of that time, she worked directly for the Pentagon until retiring to take care of her ailing husband.  Upon his death, she filled her time by faithfully supporting her grandchildren’s activities, carrying on with her gang of friends, and volunteering at Bethesda Mission, East Pennsboro Historical Society, and her church.

Irene lived with a zest for life in service to others especially to her family and friends.  She will be greatly missed.
